Dear Students and Families, An Enbukai/Shiai is an event during which students
and their instructors have a chance to demonstrate what they have learned
and accomplished in their martial arts studies.
Traditionally a Shiai in Okinawa was a promotional contest at which
students would perform kata (forms) or kumite (sparring) in a tournament
format. Although some
students are tested and promoted at our Shiai, this is only one aspect of
the event. We don't use the
outcome of kata or kumite competition to determine rank.
We do use competition, demonstrations and other activities of the
Enbukai/Shiai to help students build their self-confidence.
The Shiai allows all students to come together and share the
experience of their training. It
is also a time for parents and other family members to come out and
support the students' efforts. Each year we hold two Enbukai, one in the Fall and one in the spring. We will be talking more about the Enbukai, as we get closer. The Enbukai is an integral part of our curriculum and all students who are expected to attend unless properly excused by their instructor. If you have any questions please ask your instructor. Once again, we would like to take this
opportunity to thank you for your support of the Chatham Karate Academy
and the Mendham Karate Academy.
It is the students and their relatives that make a dojo, and Our
Dojo are strong and vibrant schools!
